Dr. Benatar, MBChB, MS, DPhil, is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Miami. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the research studies initiated by ARC, and the site-PI of other studies that ARC participates in. He hails from South Africa, which explains the funny degree behind his name.

Biostatistician/Co-Principal Investigator

Joanne is a biostatistician and also serves as the co-principal investigator of the research studies initiated by ARC. She plays an important role in the design of our studies, and in the analysis and interpretation of the data. (Joanne is camera-shy).

Volkan Granit

Volkan Granit

Neurologist

Dr. Granit is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Miller School of Medicine. He joins our team as a site-PI for the Pre-FALS and CReATe project, along with industry trials in ALS and Myasthenia Gravis.

Christin Bermudez Andrews

Christin Bermudez Andrews

Neuropsychologist

Dr. Bermudez Andrews received her PhD from Nova Southeastern University and joins our team with past clinical experience in epilepsy and neurodegenerative disorders. She currently oversees all neuropsychology evaluations across the ALS Research Collaboration, with a focus on multicultural and multilingual assessments.

Christine Stanislaw

Christine Stanislaw

Genetics Counselor

Christine is a certified genetic counselor and has several years of experience working with adult-onset genetic conditions. She provides counseling by telephone for participants in the pre-fALS study.

Sumaira Hussain

Sumaira Hussain

CReATe Project Manager

Sumaira has an educational background in neuroscience and ;sychology. She has experience in neuro-critical care research and was previously involved in pediatric neurotrauma research in the ICU. She joins our team initially as a coordinator for the Pre-fALS study, and now serves the Project Manager for the CReATe Consortium.

Eliana Reyes

Eliana Reyes

Pre-fALS Project Manager

Eliana has a BA in psychology. She has experience in biobehavioral research and was previously involved in cancer research. Her interest in clinical research, behavior, and the nervous system motivated her to become part of the Department of Neurology. She currently serves as the Project Manager for the Pre-fALS study, and as the coordinator for a myasthenia gravis clinical trial.

Anne Cooley

Sr. Clinical Research Coordinator

Anne was originally involved in laboratory research but she made the switch to clinical research after earning a MPH in Epidemiology. Since joining the ARC team as a clinical research coordinator, Anne has been involved with clinical studies related to both ALS and myasthenia gravis.

Julie Steele

Research Nurse

Julie is a Registered Nurse with 22 years of clinical research at the University of Miami’s Department of Neurology. She works with several physicians in the department coordinating various neuromuscular research projects.

Christine Seleski

Data Manager

Christine has a M.S. in biostatistics. She worked for the Southeast Center to Reduce Disparities in Oral Health at the University of Florida and the Institutional Research Office at the University of Miami. She has experience with data management, statistical analysis, and reporting results for behavioral and institutional research. She joins our team as a Data Manager.

Marielle earned a Masters of Public Health with a focus in health metrics and evaluation. She has experience with data analysis and management in cancer and global health research. She currently serves as a Data Manager for the CReATe Consortium.

Danielle Dauphin

Clinical Research Coordinator

Danielle has a BA in psychology. She has previous clinical research experience with large multisite pediatric cardiomyopathy and HIV studies and also worked for the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service. Danielle joins our team as a study coordinator for the Pre-fALS study.

Maria Catalina Fernandez

Catalina received her medical degree and completed her training in Ophthalmology in her home country Colombia. Since joining the University of Miami, she has become interested in Clinical Research in Neurology. She is currently assisting the IBMPFD research study group under Dr. Benatar’s oversight.

Jessica is a English/Spanish foreign Physician with 6 years experience in the clinical settings. She achieved a Registered Medical Assistant Certification on March 2016. Jessica has experience as a Clinical Research Coordinator in cardiology & endocrinology. She join our team as a Clinical Research Coordinator for the CReATe PGB protocol and several industry trials.

Dani Sheldon

Clinical Research Coordinator

Dani earned her BS from Florida International University and her CCRC from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. She has 5 years of clinical experience. She comes with previous experience as a Clinical Research Coordinator, working in the fields of cardiology & endocrinology. She joins our team as a Study Coordinator for the CRiALS, NeuroNEXT, VITALITY-ALS, and VIGOR-ALS studies.

Jessica Medina

Clinical Research Support Coordinator

Jessica has a BS in Biology and a BA in Psychology, with an undergraduate research focus in developmental cognitive neuroscience. She has previous clinical experience working with a pediatric patient population in otolaryngology. As an aspiring future physician, she joins our team as a site coordinator for the CReATe PGB study.

Joaquin has a BA from Emory University and started his career at the University of Miami in the Office of Research Administration. Joaquin now serves as a dedicated Project Manager for our research team. He handles any University and sponsor-initiated administrative and financial components for all of our research projects.

Ashley is a graduate of the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. The desire to pursue a medical career has drawn Ashley to join Dr. Benatar’s team. In preparation for medical school, she joins our ARC team as a research assistant working on various projects.

Wendy Levy

Wendy is a foreign medical graduate from Guatemala and comes to us with 12 years of experience in research. Her experience with studies involving Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Disease. Currently, Wendy serves as a coordinator for several ARC protocols and industry trials.
