Visco-elastic Properties of Skin in People at Risk for Familial ALS (Cutometry)

Title

Visco-elastic Properties of Skin in People at Risk for Familial ALS

Short name

Cutometry

Principal Investigator

Michael Benatar, MD, PhD

Summary

This is an ancillary study to Pre-fALS and Arimocomol (University of Miami site only) Participants in these two studies may undergo cutometry at each in-person visit. The cutometer applies a gentle negative pressure to a small area of skin to measure the elastic displacement of the skin from its initial position as well as the elastic recovery following maximum negative pressure. Previous observations have suggested that the visco-elastic properties of skin are altered in ALS and correlate with measures of disease severity. The goal of this study is to determine whether changes in the visco-elastic properties of skin are evident in advance of the onset of symptoms and signs of ALS.
